This web site is run by Mark Laurence. It is an information based site for you to gain help and inspiration for your garden.
The site aim is to raise awareness of issues of design, sustainability and environmental responsibility, by looking critically at the standards and methods that are used in design, and to show how the principles promoted here can be put into effect in both gardens and the wider landscape.
In this respect, Mark's approach to gardens is perhaps unique, even amongst designers. He has long made an informal study of design psychology and it's application in the area of landscape design. He is convinced that if the place does not function and flow correctly, no amount of impressive styling or expensive materials will hide the underlying defects.
Mark Laurence first started his landscape career in 1978, working for internationally renowned water garden expert and author, Anthony Archer-Wills. He then worked on a self-employed basis, gaining wide experience as a landscape and arboricultural contractor until 1987, after which he took the plunge and set up his design practice.
A natural artist, his ability is built upon inherent flair and eye for detail, grounded in sound, hands-on experience and practical know-how.
All of the gardens illustrated on this site are ones that Mark has designed over the years; he has also built most of them, some on his own, some with a small team of employees. A few have been built using other contractors, under mark's direct management. In a career spanning more than twenty years, there have been plenty of gardens on which he has experimented with his design ideas.
Mark believes this web-based project is now moving into a new and most exciting phase, in which the dissemination of knowledge, ideas and advice is the prime goal in an era when sustainability is the most important issue for human survival.
