The use of water in the garden or landscape almost requires a section all to itself, which it may well have one day. Ponds are certainly a specialist subject, yet there are probably more DIY ponders that any other aspect of landscaping. We all want water, yet in my experience, it is rare to see a truly good pond, either DIY or professional, as many competant landscapers are stumped when it comes to building a good water feature. If employing someone who claims to know about water features, ask to see some in the flesh. Armed with what you learn here, you should soon be able to tell if they know what they are talking about. On the other hand, if you know a good contractor you trust, you could give them the information aquired here to help them use the best techniques. And of course, if you intend to build your own pond, you have come to the right place.
The first Note, “Types of Water Feature”, is really a design note, but worth reading first to make sure you understand the difference between a pond, formal pool, water feature, rill or lake.
