Using a 12 volt Cable Joint Kit

Heat shrink cable joint kit is an easy way to extend the 12 volt side of cable on the garden lights. The connecters shown are for the Hunza range but could be used for any lights (see suppliers under the links section). keep cable lengths between transformers and lights as short as possible to avoid voltage drop; I suggest 3 -5 metres is ideal. On NO ACCOUNT should these cable joint kits be used for mains (240) voltage cable.

Here are the tools you will need - wait, you don't need all of them! The yellow handled tool is a DIY crimper, cutter and stripper which will do the job of the other three tools quite adequately if you are doing a one-off installation. Professionals may prefer to use the other tools which are, (L to R) wire strippers, crimpers and cutters. The heat gun is for stripping paint but is used here to shrink the sleeve onto the joint.

Stagger the wires so the connectors do not lie side-by-side. The flat cable has red and black cable, whilst the lights have brown and blue. It doesn't really matter which you pair up, Neutral is black or blue, so"black and blue all over", just to keep things neat!

Long wire is about 60mm and the short is 30mm. Don't have them too long or they will protrude beyond the outer sleeve, ruining the watertight connection.

Crimp the connectors on using the crimp tool, having FIRST slipped the outer sleeve onto one of the cables. If you forget to do this, you'll regret it!

Crimping finished. Slide the sleeve over the joint, ensuring an even overlap on the cables.

Using the heat gun, start in the centre and work outwards, to avoid trapping air in the joint. Don't apply heat to the cables, or they will melt.

It's all finished in 30 seconds...
