This garden is just a stone's throw from the beach, on the south coast.
As the environment dominates the atmosphere of the place, we brought that feel into the garden and enhanced it, rather than trying to avoid it, as so many coastal gardens do. |
This shows the entrance to the garden, looking over the front gate. |
The house is East facing, so a breakfast deck makes the most of the morning sun and by angling around, catches the sun right up to midday. |
A general view of the garden, from the house end. The gravel path runs between raised borders of Purbeck stone, now mostly hidden by the planting. |
The front door is framed by the pergola extending out from the deck area, creating a transitional entrance. |
The planting seems lush and mature, although it is only three years old. |
Every garden needs an outdoor room, somewhere to sit, as an focus for all subsequent design. |
The fence and entrance gate undulate, as a reflection of the nearby sea. Colours are sea-washed green-blue-greys. |
After only three years, these phormiums are over six foot tall, with twelve foot flower spikes! |
